People are preparing for some of the big hunting seasons coming up and Wilderness Tactical Products is rolling out a MultiCam Hunting Vest and Shirt. There are four deep front pockets on the face of the vest with added internal organization.

The vest is derived from their Wilderness Hunting Shirt, so it is no surprise that the features are similar except with long sleeves. Size extenders can be added to either item to make room for bulkier clothing underneath, added ventilation, and we are sure for those with a bit more added girth. HPG Tarahumara Pack Review

$

We have covered many different offerings from Hill People Gear and I just recently picked up the Tarahumara Pack for a Rim to Rim to Rim trip in the Grand Canyon. This would be my day pack for Hydration, Two days of clothing, first aid kit, and food I would eat along the way. This worked out to 25 miles each way and have since carried over the pack to weekend trail runs now that it has heated up.

Tarahumara Fully Loaded (Bright Angel Creek-Bottom of Grand Canyon)
You will not find many personal reviews here, because for one we are not going to cover products we sell, which would be disingenuous and we generally turn down review requests, since we typically don't have the time for a proper assessment or simply won't use the product as intended in a rigorous fashion. However for the Tarahumara pack, I can properly say it has taken a good workout for its intended purpose and proven quite useful.

HPG Tarahumara Pack
The Tarahumara Pack has a simple layout with a main compartment for load carry and a hang tab to secure a hydration bladder. There is also a full top-open slot  facing your back for added storage.  I used this section for my hydration carrier. I carried a 3 Liter Hydraform Bladder which fit snugly when the pack was full to the gills. This made for even more padding.

There are two external side pouches to slide water bottles of various sizes, snacks, tools, phone, or other items you want quick access too. I used these for snacks, phone, keys, and hand sanitizer. These are secured by a compression strap that runs across the lip of both pouches, which is buckled and pulled taught. A secondary compression strap is present at the tap of the pack to keep anything from shifting. There is also a cord system with a cord lock at the base of the pack to secure a sleeping pad or other small items. I utilized this for a jacket.

Tarahumara Pack Rear
A distinct part of this pack is the shoulder harness which rides across the top of your back/shoulders to evenly distribute weight rather than have straps ride on your shoulder alone. This pack does not have a waist belt, but given the small load, the harness system proved to be enough for a full pack. However, it can be tied into their Prairie Belt if you need the additional support. Hill People Gear also has a running harness, which you can utilize to replace the standard version and tie into their Kit Bag for additional storage as well as carry a pistol at your chest. The standard harness has proven sufficient for running when carrying a bladder alone while providing a snug fit to your body, which is aided with a sternum strap that can be tightened against your chest.

Hill People Gear offers additional configurations with their other packs to provide a variety of modular load carry options. The only problem I could find thus far is the lack of a drain hole at the base, which only became an issue due to a fault with the bladder, which soaked through to the main compartment. A little DIY could fix this if it became a major issue. You can purchase this pack online  in Coyote, Foliage or Ranger Green at HillPeopleGear.com

Grey Ghost Gear and Tactical Tailor Team Up

$

While we knew Tactical Tailor and Grey Ghost Gear were industry partners to a certain extent, this announcement seems to be a clear indicator that something deeper is afoot with big things coming down the pipeline. You can read their full release below.

Lakewood, WA—01 July 13
“We have gotten into the fashion of talking of cavalry tactics, artillery tactics, and infantry tactics. This distinction is nothing but a mere abstraction. There is but one art, and that is the tactics of the combined arms.”
— Maj. Gerald Gilbert, The Evolution of Tactics, 1907
“Shit, it’s the Blues Brothers!” Matt Murphy, 1980
ALCON: Bring it in, take a knee, listen up. Tactical Tailor is joining Grey Ghost Gear in a strategic alliance the likes of which hasn’t been seen since Jake got out of prison and rejoined Elwood Blue.
Tactical Tailor is a Tacoma WA based manufacturer of US-made, Berry Amendment compliant tactical gear. Grey Ghost Gear is a ‘boutique’ manufacturer of bad ass niche kit headquartered in Dalton, ID. Both companies are Veteran owned, and GGG is Service Connected Disables Veteran classified company. Like the Blues Brothers, both can do big things by themselves…but it’s when they get together that things get epic.
“The two companies have done some work together before, but not like this,” says CEO (and former 2/75 Ranger) Casey Ingels. “Tac Tailor will be working with Grey Ghost much more consistently. We’ll leverage the unique strengths of both companies to increase our offering tothe end users that will let us put some things in the field that will change everything.”
Neither company releases a new piece of gear until it’s been deployed and evaluated downrange—true story, no bullshit. Ingels recently spent time on the ground in Afghanistan handing stuff out to guys on the sharp end so they’d have it to try out (for instance 3RD Group has a lot of it downrange now). They receive feedback daily via e-mail and frequent social media traffic. It isn’t just tested by guys on the ground either. Members of JSOC and SOCOM test it all, as do a cross-selection of line Soldiers and Marines so the conventional voice isn’t left out.

In addition to the brand gear it builds, Tactical Tailor constructs kit for many other companies. It is an expansive list that includes H&K, Benchmade, Gerber, Leupold, Crimson Trace, Knights Armament…virtually a who’s who in the industry. Grey Ghost Gear set the tactical community on its ass over the last year when it demonstrated its quick turnaround, rapid prototyping and overall agility—this is a company that received a call from a Tier One unit with a need, prototyped it, modified it and had the finished product in their hands helping kill Muj in a week.

“Tactical Tailor brings production muscle to Grey Ghost. Grey Ghost is dexterous and responsive,” Ingels says, waxing serious. “Though its operations base is in Idaho, its relationship with manufacturers in the UK and elsewhere offer domestic and foreign options that TT just won’t have on its own. TT has a couple decades of combat proven equipment to speak for its quality. Tailor equipment will remain Made in the USA. The two companies will remain extant as separate companies, working jointly.”

“We'll put the band back together, do a few gigs, we get some bread,” chuckles Tactical Tailor Director of Sales (and retired Army SNCO) GW Ayers. “No, in all seriousness, this is going to let us do some great things for the warfighter. CALL [Center for Army Lessons Learned] defines joint synergy as having the strengths of each service combine to overcome the limitations of the others, or to reinforce the good effects. That’s what we’re going to be doing, and it’s the guys on the ground that will benefit.”

Navigation and general survival skills are essential for those looking to venture away from the roof over your head, but having a GPS device at hand along with some form of communication to the outside world can mean everything when all else fails. Brunton has brought Horizon's Minipak handheld fuel cell USB charger to the U.S. Market and are now releasing their own outdoor rugged version branded as the Brunton Reactor, which will also utilize the same style of Hydrogen Cartridges.

Brunton Reactor
The Brunton Reactor will power your cell phone or any device with a standard USB cord input. We had been following all of the shenanigans with the Double Tap Pistol since SHOT Show 2012. It seems Double Tap Defense finally worked out all the legal wranglings and are getting their Derringer style Over/Under two shot pistol into the hands of some shooters. Perhaps there are other videos out there, but this is our first glimpse of the DoubleTap being demonstrated by Gun Websites with its .45 ACP barrels. This can also be interchanged fairly easy with a 9mm barrel set up. As for functionality, you be the judge.

Cadet USA is bridging the gap between camo fashion and practical men's apparel with their limited edition camouflage line. Cadet has three items of Men's Apparel in the MultiCam pattern and we have yet to see a 100% Cotton Lamda Fabric Tank Top in the camo. Tactical Taping

After seeing Olympians wear it along with 5K superstars, it is a wonder that Kinesiology tape is not more thoroughly recommended for any type of training. Perhaps a requirement for a roll of tape in your first aid kit should now be a given after seeing this series of videos from Rock Tap, which has been promoted by Chris Costa for quite some time now. We are sure there will be many couch commando detractors who have never needed that extra edge, but lets see them argue the point with Decathletes, Marathon Runners, and more pointedly tactical operators of yore who just recently started receiving the the aid of tape.

Chris Costa helps explain the application in the tactical arena in the video below. Athletes have been training their bodies to provide maximum performance for centuries, so why not take the 21st Century advantage. Of course you could research the scientific research surrounding Kinesiology tape and see its efficacy.

House Bill Would Expand Definition of "Armor Piercing Ammunition"

$

Where there is a will there is a way and many Congressmen are looking to find some way to further legislate the use of firearms and House Bill H.R.2566 is looking to further regulate the type of ammo you will be able to purchase for your handgun. The security of law enforcement has been  a go to cause for politicians who seek to push through many types of gun control.

"Armor Piercing Ammunition" or the more inflammatory term "Cop Killer Bullets are" a great means to strike fear in the public in order to go along with any legislation that looks to only make our Public Safety Officials safer on the streets, but couldn't possibly cause any harm. Of course what the politicians forget to address is why Law Enforcement or Military is still allowed to use such ammunition, but it is not available to the general public for personal defense. If you are unaware of the current laws regarding "armor piercing ammunition", this section from Title 18 of the U.S. Code gives you a quick intro to some ramifications of federal law.

U.S. Code Title 18 Sec. 922(a)(7&8)

(7) for any person to manufacture or import armor piercing ammunition, unless—
(A) the manufacture of such ammunition is for the use of the United States, any department or agency of the United States, any State, or any department, agency, or political subdivision of a State;
(B) the manufacture of such ammunition is for the purpose of exportation; or
(C) the manufacture or importation of such ammunition is for the purpose of testing or experimentation and has been authorized by the Attorney General;
(8) for any manufacturer or importer to sell or deliver armor piercing ammunition, unless such sale or delivery—

(A) is for the use of the United States, any department or agency of the United States, any State, or any department, agency, or political subdivision of a State;
(B) is for the purpose of exportation; or
(C) is for the purpose of testing or experimentation and has been authorized by the Attorney General
As you can currently see your normal every day Joe Schmo is not allowed to purchase any rounds defined as "Armor Piercing Ammunition". The kicker comes down to what is considered "Armor Piercing" and this is where the latest bill will play a huge effect on what you will allowed to purchase for your own persona defense unless of course you are in the minority that fall in one of those categories where it is legal to carry such protection. Below you can see the current definition along with the alterations and additions that would be made if H.R.2566 would pass.

(17)
(A) The term “ammunition” means ammunition or cartridge cases, primers, bullets, or propellent powder designed for use in any firearm.
(B) The term “armor piercing ammunition” means—
(i) a projectile or projectile core which may be used in a handgun and which is constructed entirely (excluding the presence of traces of other substances) from one or a combination of tungsten alloys, steel, iron, brass, bronze, beryllium copper, or depleted uranium, or
(ii) a full jacketed projectile larger than .22 caliber designed and intended for use in a handgun and whose jacket has a weight of more than 25 percent of the total weight of the projectile.and
(iii) a projectile that –
(I)            May be used in a handgun; and
(II)          The Attorney General determines, under section 926(d), to be capable of penetrating body armor.

(C) The term “armor piercing ammunition” does not include shotgun shot required by Federal or State environmental or game regulations for hunting purposes, a frangible projectile designed for target shooting, a projectile which the Attorney General finds is primarily intended to be used for sporting purposes, or any other projectile or projectile core which the Attorney General finds is intended to be used for industrial purposes, including a charge used in an oil and gas well perforating device.

Essentially the main alteration would provide the Attorney General the means to determine what is "Armor Piercing Ammunition" for a handgun. You can see that the sporting purposes exception is still present which would protect ammunition utilized in pistols that are chambered for rifle caliber ammunition, however there never was a primary exception for ammunition utilized for self defense. The ability to further regulate ammunition is given to the Attorney General by adding sub-section (d) to  Section 926 of U.S. Code Title 18 as seen below.

(b) Determination of Capability of Projectiles To Penetrate Body
Armor.--
(1) In general.--Section 926 of such title is amended by
adding at the end the following:
``(d)(1) The Attorney General, in consultation with Director of
Operational Test and Evaluation of the Department of Defense, shall
promulgate standards for the uniform testing of projectiles against the
Body Armor Exemplar.
``(2) The standards promulgated under paragraph (1) shall take into
account, among other factors, variations in performance that are
related to the type of handgun used, the length of the barrel of the
handgun, the amount and kind of powder used to propel the projectile,
and the design of the projectile.
``(3) In paragraph (1), the term `Body Armor Exemplar' means body
armor that the Attorney General determines meets minimum standards for
the protection of law enforcement officers.''.
(2) Timing of promulgation of standards.--The Attorney
General shall promulgate the standards required by section
926(d) of title 18, United States Code, within 1 year after the
date of the enactment of this section.
(3) Assessment and modification of standards.--The Attorney
General shall assess the standards every 3 years, or more
frequently if the Attorney General finds that technological
advances warrant doing so, and shall modify the standards as
appropriate.

In the January 2013 Washington Post article,"The Cop Killer Bullet Myth", Emily Miller points out  that, "Cops simply aren't being killed by crooks using exotic, hardened projectiles, but it sounds like a scary possibility." Further complicating the facts, The National Institute of Justice has set standards for the ballistic resistance of body armor with level IIIA being the highest protection against handgun ammunition. The NIJ Standards show the following to test Type IIIA Armor:

Type IIIA armor that is new and unworn shall be tested with .357 SIG FMJ Flat Nose (FN) bullets with a specified mass of 8.1 g (125 gr) and a velocity of 448 m/s ± 9.1 m/s (1470 ft/s ± 30 ft/s) and with .44 Magnum Semi Jacketed Hollow Point (SJHP) bullets with a specified mass of 15.6 g (240 gr) and a velocity of 436 m/s ± 9.1 m/s (1430 ft/s ± 30 ft/s). Type IIIA armor that has been conditioned shall be tested with .357 SIG FMJ FN bullets with a specified mass of 8.1 g (125 gr) and a velocity of 430 m/s ± 9.1 m/s (1410 ft/s ± 30 ft/s) and with .44 Magnum SJHP bullets with a specified mass of 15.6 g (240 gr) and a velocity of 408 m/s ± 9.1 m/s (1340 ft/s ± 30 ft/s).

Any body armor rated higher is tested against rifle ammunition. So, if this is the baseline for penetration then you are essentially restricting ammunition based on an existing standard of protection. It is a chicken and egg scenario providing further legislation restricting what you are putting into your handgun for personal defense.

In reality 17 officers were killed while wearing body armor that was penetrated from 2000-2009 as per FBI Statistics. Only one officer was killed in such a way with a handgun out of 536 officers killed during the same period. The type of ammunition was not provided other than it was a 9mm, nor is further elaboration given to the type of armor utilized.

We have not heard of a "Cop Killer Bullet" epidemic since 2009 nor do we intend to demean the loss of life for those that put their lives on the line to protect us, but the statistics speak for themselves when seeing an issue being address in Congress that should not be.

We don't know the exact ramifications of such legislation if passed, but we are fairly certain that it would limit the type of ammo you can choose for self defense. This will only fix a problem that does not exist and could further restrict ammunition purchases to an extent that is vague with the possibility of a wide ranging infringement on your right to bear arms. It is important to let your Representative know that they should not support H.R.2566 in any manner. We have provided the complete bill below in its entirety.
