Team Snake Hound

Snake Hound Machine has been branching out to many different avenues of the firearm industry and have taken the time to build from the ground up with the highest quality in mind. They have now announced the formation of Team Snake Hound. We have provided the full announcement below.

After months of planning we are finally ready to announce Team Snake Hound, our Kinesthetic Reeducation Division (training department) Headed by Jeff Varner  a veteran of the Rob Pincus Combat Focus Shooting program. Team Snake Hound is focused on offering vital and affordable classes that provide the necessary skills and information to help people be safe and potentially save lives.  We are committed to providing value and have a great passion for teaching and helping others.

Often you will hear us say we are “doing the right things, for the right reasons” this stems from the fact that we are offering training because our customers have asked for it, and our courses are structured around three types of classes we feel are important: how to understand and repair your firearms, how to properly employ your firearms, and how to give proper medical care to yourself and others.

Located in New Hampshire, the unarguable home of New England gun culture allows us to fill a major void in regional and local training options and furthers our long term goal of establishing New Hampshire as a destination location for the firearms industry. Information about the team, bios, and scheduled classes can be found at AllWeDoIsW.in

Jeff Varner has been a CFS instructor since 2009. Since that time Jeff has taught with Rob Pincus multiple times and has taught a wide variety of students; ranging from military, Law Enforcement and civilians.

After moving from So Cal to Washington state in 2007, his ability to obtain Concealed weapons permit encouraged Jeff to attend many more courses, and eventually become a NRA instructor encompassing multiple disciplines. Jeff's goal is to teach his students how to be as dangerous to the bad guy as possible. Jeff then came across the original CFS DVD, which after viewing the DVD, Jeff contacted Rob Pincus and signed up for an end user course, as well as an instructor development course.

No Sign Means Good to Go

We are starting to see the mainstream media extend the Starbucks guns not welcome debate into other establishments with the Business Insider asking McDonalds and Dunkin Donuts what is their company gun policies for customers. They could have just said no comment, but at least they stuck with the "we follow applicable laws". It is not clear to us when or why it was determined that Starbucks would be set as an example. Nor do we understand why elements of the gun community provided them with free advertising for having the same policy as many coffee shops, but clearly when their hand was forced it backfired on those same elements.

NO Sign = GTG

There are plenty of businesses that do not have "No Firearms Allowed" signs greeting you at the front door. At least in Arizona, this is the only thing legally prohibiting gun owners from carrying in their restaurant establishment unless they serve alcohol and you don't have a concealed carry permit. We don't know what the case may be for other states where laws vary quite drastically in this regard, but simply put if you don't want the answer to be "NO", then don't bother asking. If there is no sign then you are good to go for restaurants. Obviously you need to research your own local laws if there are further restrictions for specific establishments, especially when it comes to alcohol sales. Technically this sign has no legal bearing, since it doesn't follow all of the requirements by AZ statutes, but the sentiment is clear.

We already see some within the gun community bringing up the debate on McDonald's and Dunkin Donuts. How about we just let this whole movement die on the vine. Unless you want further establishments that you can't visit or bring your children, then just stick by the No Sign = GTG logic. Perhaps the mainstream media will play with the concept a little longer, but if there isn't a retort from the gun community on the issue then there will be no controversy and thus a rather boring news story will no longer be covered. Obviously, this just applies to private businesses selling food and there are plenty of Federal or Local laws governing different public or private buildings, so do your own research and make sure you are within legal reason whether you are open or concealed carrying.

You may say, "Well Starbucks doesn't have a sign". In which case you can make up your own mind. You are an adult in the real world.

There are many variables to consider when purchasing a new firearm. Typically you can break it down by components along with reputation for quality. Sometimes there are factors you are simply not going to see while shooting. Here is a side by side thermal view of Patriot Ordnance Factory's POF P415 compared to a standard M4. The video description gives a good quick overview for aspects to consider while viewing.

Crye Precision Camouflage Crowned King

The Army has all but officially announced that Crye Precision has won Phase IV of the Camouflage Improvement Effort. The camouflage has yet to be released publically, but as Soldier Systems has reported in their scoop, the patterns will be environmental variants of their existing MultiCam pattern. Stars and Stripes aloofly broke the story in piece on tattoos and grooming standard changes by touching on SMA Chandler stating the new camouflage would be phased in within 8 to 9 months with the different colors palettes utilizing a pattern similar to MultiCam.

This certainly brings up several interesting questions like, "What took you so long" or "What was that IP Rights solicitation all about if Crye will be Awarded anyway"? Another great quandary in the saga will be how other services will adapt over the ensuing years given the recent Enyeart Amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act requiring all services to adopt the same camouflage uniforms by 2018. Obviously these questions among others will be answered in due time. Congrats to Crye Precision on the news and all of the finalists including Kryptek, ADS/Guy Cramer, and Brookwoods Companies Inc. They all received great publicity from the proceedings.

The AK-47 will be a tad less socialist as private investors will soon be purchasing a 49% stake in the newly formed Kalashnikov Group. The Russian State will still hold the controlling interest, so beyond a mere marketing strategy, the consolidation of several state owned firearms manufacturers under the Kalashnikov Group umbrella has also developed into the partial privatization of a big part of the countries small arms industry.

Sage Dynamics Firearms Training: EDC Part 2 of 2

Every Day Carry when it comes to what I consider second line gear is basically what is kept in a bag, or in your vehicle.  If you are in the habit of keeping a bag of some sort on your person the majority of the time through practice or necessity, there are a few basic items you should consider a minimum requirement for that bag.  Now, there is a pretty big temptation when it comes to an EDC bag to attempt to carry everything you could conceivably need when facing a medical emergency, zombie apocalypse or the sudden and unexplainable rock climbing challenge.

As a former infantryman I learned the importance of packing light and as a police officer I am constantly reminded that second line gear is just that; essential emergency or routine items for sudden situations.  An EDC bag should be large enough for such items and no larger, or it will begin to collect trash, random receipts, misplaced gear and the occasional handful of spent brass.

EDC Bag Layout
Just as with first line gear, your EDC choices are going to be occupationally and geographically specific.  It’s also helpful to take into account your normal travel routine and recreational activities.   If you are strictly an urbanite the majority of the year, a snake bite kit or GPS may not take as high a priority as say an emergency phone charger or bus pass.  Conversely, if you live in a rural area, you may find yourself wanting to keep more ammunition on hand, or a small emergency blanket.   Try as hard as you want, it’s impossible to be prepared for everything with a bag intended to be carried often, but you can certainly cover the more reasonable expectations and leave the rest to your vehicle or third line gear.
EDC bag:  We choose our bag first, with what we want to carry in mind.  My personal choice is a Hazard 4 Evac Plan-B model bag because it literally is the perfect size for what I need and want to carry.  Through a few years of experimentation I have collected as many bags and packs as holsters and had all but given up on finding my Goldilocks “Just Right” until I came across Hazard 4 bags.  The Plan B is simple, comfortable and fairly modular for its size.  Most importantly, it carries everything I need and want in a simple one-shoulder strap design that is just civilian enough to blend in.  I didn’t want a bag that screamed gun owner/solider/cop but I did want one in a subdued color with a utility design.  OD was a good way to go.
EDC Bag: Main Compartment

As far as the bag durability (which should be a consideration), it’s taken a few tumbles in the woods, more than a few bumps and hang ups along the way and has been soaked more times than I can remember.   Perhaps the greatest feature is the fact that it stores almost anywhere and can be slung from chest to back without removing it for access on the go.  It is more expensive than some comparable bags but in my opinion, well worth the money.  When looking for a bag, I would recommend; durability size, modular features, and a subdued design and appearance that helps it blend in.
EDC Bag: Front Pocket
Medical:  I am a strong believer in carrying basic first aid and trauma supplies for a number of reasons; the primary reason being that if you carry a firearm or work in an occupation with firearms, there is always a chance for trauma.  Even when considering complicated wounds, you can keep medical essentials to a minimum and well within your level of training.  It’s also prudent to keep simple bandages and other medical items such as gloves, disinfectant and simple pain relievers on hand.
EDC Bag: Medical Layout
My bag contains immediate trauma treatment items such as a chest seal, Quik Clot, Celox, bandages and tourniquets as well as basic first aid supplies.  Obviously my main concern is puncture/penetration wounds.
Survival:  Survival items are going to be largely subjective and dependent on normal activities, occupation and intent.  An additional knife, spare batteries for electronic items, a spare flashlight, GPS, emergency blanket, water purification tablets, electrolyte tablets, tape, rope, fire starter, binoculars, sunblock, water, food; the potential list of items that falls under survival can get large, fast and just like medical items, can quickly fill up your bag before you have a chance to consider any other items.  Keep it as simple as possible in regards to what you can expect to encounter and you can obviously add or remove items based on your travel plans.

EDC Bag: Electronics
My list of “survival” items is small for my EDC, as most of my “Survival” items go to my third line gear.  A kestrel, some spare batteries, a Streamlight stylus (which is a nice piece of gear with reasonable brightness and changeable color heads), NODS and a backup Surefire flashlight are that can usually be found in my bag.
Tool Layout
Tools and equipment:  Basic tools are a good idea to keep on hand, from a simple multi-tool to a small tool kit.  Most problems you encounter can be solved readily without the need for carrying the additional weight of multiple special purpose tools.  Remember, for EDC we want the bag to be simple enough that it’s not cumbersome or heavy, which will lead some to only carry it occasionally.  I tend to keep it very simple in terms of tools and equipment, normally only carrying a spare pare of cuffs, multi tool and knife.  I also keep my pick set in my EDC bag.

Misc. Items
General convenience items:  This is another category that can quickly add weight and reduce available space in a bag.  Simple items that you will use often such as a small camera, note pad, pens, markers, lighter, zip ties, etc.  Many of these items will also fall into other categories or serve multiple purposes.  I have a pocket Ref, not pad and some chem lights.
Spare Ammo

Weapon Specific:  It’s always a good idea to have extra ammunition on hand, as well as a way to carry that ammunition on your person if the need arises.  I keep a minimum of two additional handgun magazines for my EDC Glock 19 and one additional AR magazine for the AR in my vehicle inside my EDC.  Obviously more can be added if I feel the need.
Occupational items:  If you work in LE, private security or just want to be prepared for the eventuality, restraints of some sort are wise to have in your bag.  One or two pairs of handcuffs or flex-cuffs are great to keep close by.  I would avoid using zip ties in place of flex cuffs as even the larger and thicker zip ties are not designed to restrain people, even if they can actually be used to do so.  As you can see by those items I keep on hand, my bag is set up more occupationally than it is recreationally.  This doesn’t mean a citizen can’t have the exact same items, in fact I would encourage it.  I want every responsible citizen, regardless of occupation, prepared for the when not the if and that means taking a basic EDC seriously.  You can add to, or take away from these recommended items as you need but I would strongly recommend at the minimum, spare ammunition and medical in your EDC bag.

We have been quite intrigued with the use of the LiteLok material from Duro Textiles for packs, since it was first released and have seem limited use thus far for that purpose. The New Wraith Pack from Grey Ghost Gear features the lightweight fabric and increased capacity compared to their Lightweight Assault Pack, which was one of the first packs commercially released in LiteLok.

Wraith Litelok Pack in MultiCam

The Wraith is a lightweight day pack with a slim profile that can carry up to a 3 liter hydration bladder and your necessary field kit. It consists of one large compartment that hold more than 80% of the capacity. There is also a small front pocket at the basis for quick access kit. As typical with newer lightweight packs, it comes with a complete hardware to attach the pack directly to your load bearing equipment. You also have shoulder straps for standalone use, which can be hidden away when not utilized. The pack also comes with its own two liter bladder.

The pack is offered in MultiCam and Coyote and they appear to be moving fast already. They also offer a version in Kryptek Highlander that utilizes 500D Nylon rather than the LiteLok material. You can view full specs and ordering at: GreyGhostGear.com

Modular Magazine Pouches TGL Review

$

There are a lot of great modular pouches on the market today. The Gear Locker has shared with us a review with some of the top in the industry.

Modular Magazine Pouches
As equipment manufactures strive to build gear that is lighter, lower IR signature, and modular they have left no stone unturned.  From the rigs themselves to the pouches, all are fair game in the era where our war fighters are fighting at altitudes that were just the realm of climbers. For those that use Airsoft as a training tool, they also benefit from the new technology.

For this review, we are going to compare three different modular magazine pouches.  The list is: HSGI Soft TACO, HSP D3 Chest Rig’s StuffIt Pouch, and MSM Bottle Corsett.  Each of these pouches are designed to hold M4 Magazines or other items.  For our review, we cover how they operate, and their functionality.
First on the list is the HSP D3′s StuffIt pouch. It is designed as small, stuffIt style pouch that a user can put just about anything into.  It was designed to be a pouch that is user definable.  It works great on the D3 Rig, but is limited in size and width.  When I tested the Chest Rig, I used it for stuffing my Dead Rag into. It was a great pouch for those smaller items.

HSP D3 Stuffit Pouch
Next up is the MSM Bottle Corset.  It is a pouch that is designed to hold a water bottle by adjusting the shock cord sides and the bottom.  There is a Velcro flap that can be adjusted depending on the length of the device.  But, you can hold more than your standard water bottle.  You can also hold magazines because of the shock cord and adjustable “floor” of the pouch.

MSM Bottle Corset
When you get the pouch, you will see that it is flat with the shock cord extended all the way.  The best way to size the pouch is by placing the bottle or magazines (yes you can do a double stack) into the pouch and adjust the cord around it.

What I found to have issues is the Velcro floor. Over time, use and adjusting that floor will weaken that Velcro, which could lead to the items in that pouch to be expelled.  You also have a snag hazard possiblity as you traverse through brush or wooded areas.  I would have preferred a solid floor to the pouch and different design.
And Finally, we have the Soft Taco from HSGI.  This is another version of their TACO product. For their soft TACO, HSGI went non-ridgid (hence the name) and designed it to be used for securing water bottles or magazines of what ever you choose. Like it’s brother, the hard TACO, this pouch has adjustability by using the shock cord that covers its sides.

HSGI Soft TACO
Of all 3 pouches, TGL felt the soft TACO worked the best and was the most versitle.  It eliminiated the failure point of having an adjustable “floor” of the pouch and having solid sides instead of just using the shock cord to act as the side walls as the MSM Bottle Corsett does.  And, the size of the overall pouch allowed it to be used with more items unlike the StuffIt.
In the age of the modular pouch, it appears that HSGI still has the edge in that department. For addition reviews visit TheGearLocker.net

Predictions for new products are starting to float around as we are just about two months from SHOT Show 2014. SIG Addict Forum has released some confirmed firearms to be expected at the big show for SIG Sauer. The new releases in handguns will include a SIG 1911 chambered for .357 SIG and .38 Super, a SIG P290 chambered in .380 ACP, and a SIG P938 in .22LR. They also note that a P227 Compact is rumored to be released, but has not been confirmed.

SIG Sauer MPX
For rifles you can expect some new models of existing platforms including a SIG 516 Carbon, SIG M400 Predator, SIG 716 DMR, and SIG 556xi. You can also expect a suppressed version of the SSG3000 with an 18" Barrel. Supposedly there is also a never been predicted model to be released as well, which is being kept under wraps. Feel free to do the guessing for us. We will of course be looking for the chance to shoot their SIG MPX, which was released last year, but not available at the Media Range Day.
