There were a few booths that had a remembrance on display for Kalashnikov, who just recently passed including Knight's Armament.

Knight's Armament also had one of the original ArmaLite model AR-10 rifles on display from which Eugene Stoner started it all for the M-16, M4, and many other AR variants.

Midwest Industries at SHOT Show 2014

There were only a few aftermarket parts for the Tavor SAR at SHOT Show and aside from triggers, Midwest Industries was the only manufacturer to have a product on hand with their Tavor Handguard, which integrates the KeyMod Direct Attachment System.

Midwest Industries Tavor SAR Handguard
The Tavor SAR Handguard shown here is the initial version with a light integrated model to soon follow. Midwest Industries also had the first Drop-In KeyMod Handguards on hand, which are already shipping. We wanted a video demo for you since they are so quick to install, but they pinned in the handguard since there are a lot of sticky fingers around the show. Unfortunately at an industry only event, theft is still a problem.

MI K-Series Drop-In KeyMod Handguard
Midwest Industries is branching out into all AR-15 parts and were showing off their new AR Billet Receiver set. They are a great looking product at a good value.
Midwest Industries AR Billet Upper and Lower Set
They also had their K-Series free float and AK handguard on hand featuring the KeyMod system.

K.I.S.S. with KeyMod

We were talking with a firearms parts manufacturer and found it funny that despite them utilizing the KeyMod system, he noted that he didn't know what it was all about. We see this same acknowledgement from many people and just want to say KeyMod is simple stupid. This isn't meant as a jab or a superior understanding of the matter. In the end it is a basic concept that people shouldn't over-think.

The slotted attachment points take away material to make for a lightweight modular attachment system. The design is open source and the inset slots allow for a low profile attachment of compatible accessories that anyone can develop. KeyMod is a newer development in firearms handguards, but similar concepts have been utilized in many other mounting platforms including rack shelving and in the case above a power strip. Some alignment is required and some make light of the similarities to rifle handguards and these other platforms, but the simplicity of it should be embraced. Obviously many in the industry are picking up on it even if some are over-thinking it as well

Vertx A-Range Bag

We received an in-depth look at the new EDC Packs and Range Bags that will soon be offered by Vertx. The designs are very impressive and you can tell a lot of thought went into the details. The A-Rang Bag is everything you could want for carrying your shooting essentials.

Vertx A-Range Bag
A front flap on the bag folds down revealing two mesh organizational pouches to secure your personal effects as well as two handled fabric drawers that slide into the base of the pack. Each drawer comes with a mesh bottom bag that can secure your ammunition or spent brass, but let debris fall free with a quick shake. The flap it self is lined with hook face and can double as a cleaning mat.

The main compartment has a dual zipper closure that opens completely for access to internal storage. There are side pockets within the pack for organization. The entire bag can be locked down in your vehicle or wherever you take it utilizing an integrated lock down cable system. No one is making a quick get away with your range essentials when they are secured with a lock. The A-Range Bag comes complete with a 6 pistol mag pouch and will be available in Black and Smoke Grey. You can expect the full range of Vertx bags and packs before this summer.

Strike Industries at SHOT Show 2014

We like to see the prototypes at SHOT Show and Strike Industries had a few on display. These concepts wouldn't be given much credence if it wasn't for the fact that Strike Industries often shows off their initial design all the way up to fruition. Below is a look at their new offset microsights utilizing 3-D printed materials. The sight folds over to fit within the spacer on the Picatinny rail for a flat stowage when not in use. These will be manufactured with aluminum for the final production model.

Strike Industries Micro Sight Prototype
Strike Industries had their own replacement handguard for the H&K mr556a1 Rifle this is a production model version, but wait, there's more...

Strike Industries mr556a1 Handguard
In addition to the standard handguard offering, Strike Industries will also be offering a KeyMod version for the mr556a1. H&K utilized a modular attachment system on the latest model mr556a1-SD, which was similar to KeyMod, but in a backward configuration compared to the standard use, as well as a slightly different slot design.

Strike Industries mr556a1 KeyMod Handguard
Strike Industries stuck with the industry standard KeyMod and had two prototypes to show off the concept. One is a single rail, while another is a three piece design with a separate continuous top rail and a detachable lower handguard.

Back in late November we reported on the U.S. Army releasing a pre-solicitation for 15,000 yards of permethrin treated fabric with the Operational Camouflage Pattern for Natick Soldier Research Development and Engineering Center. They have now updated the status to Solicitation with an RFP for a total of 75,000 yards of permethrin treated 50/50 NYCO fabric and 32,900 permethrin treated 50/50 NYCO uniforms in Universal Camouflage Pattern.

In the synopsis the Army Contracting Command stills designates the pattern as OCP, however in the actual solicitation they have updated the pattern requesting UCP for the fabric Type I Class II materials further designating a permethrin treated 50/50 NYCO UCP Fabric for the ACU. We have requested clarification on the actual pattern to be utilized and perhaps it is only requested for testing purposes e.g. more affordable alternative. However, it doesn't look like UCP is going away anytime soon based on the information as shown here. See the full solicitation as it stands now at FBO.gov

Bates Code 6 Boots

Didn't see too many hexagons at SHOT Show, but Bates did release their new Code 6 Boot line which is their latest offering yet and does integrate the geometry into the upper. There will be two 6" and 8" models that feature a YKK Nylon Side zipper with a neoprene hoodie, along with a standard 4" model. Apparently the hexagonal design element also adds structure to the upper which is manufactured with a lighweight leather and nylon material with a TPU Enhanced Print.

Code 6 8" Side Zip
The Code 6 Boots include a slip resistant rubber outsole, lightweight Phylon Midsole, dual density cushioned insert, V-Fit lacing, as well as a padded collar and ergo flexpoints. Bates reduced weight by 20% compared to their previous lightweight boot, though they were not giving out exact figures.

We had the chance to check out the new .308 SRC Rifle at the Windham Weaponry Booth. There were a few lightweight .308 chambered rifles on hand and Windham Weaponry brings the goods at a great price point. We discussed with their representative on hand as to what the future will bring for the company and you can also expect a rifle chambered in 7.62x39mm, but you shouldn't expect an AK style variant.

Windham Weaponry .308 SRC (Center)
Windham Weaponry also had their Varmint Exterminator Rifle on hand in its latest wood laminate furniture models, which have a 20" barrel chambered in .223 Rem and a fixed buttstock. They also will have a lot of different camo options for their different rifles including one with Magpul furniture in A-TACS Camo.

Magpul had a lot of great releases this year, so they only had some small sling mount accessories put out at SHOT Show, however they had quite the display showing off their AK Products. Krebs Custom Guns provided one of their VEPR based KV-13A Rifles to show off the Magpul MOE AK Pistol Grip and 30 Round AK PMAG. We are still waiting for the magazine start shipping out which should come any day now, but this was one of the more impressive AK rifles to be seen at SHOT Show this year. Luckily the photo turned out as a half way decent representation as well.

Crye Precision Military Gear SHOT Show 2014

We were a bit star struck with the new SIX12 Shotgun that Crye Precision surprised everyone with at SHOT Show 2014, but they had a lot of other great new apparel and gear on display. It is a bit crowded in the Crye Precision booth, but here are a couple angles on the Crye Precision FIELDSUIT and COMBATSUIT. These are similar one piece designs built as a comfortable coverall providing the same mobility as a shirt-trouser set with a patent pending zipper design. Each suit has an internal waist adjuster, cargo pockets w/ zip closure, reinforced seat, gusseted crotch, and bicep pockets.

The COMBATSUIT stands apart with stretch knee panels, while both have reinforced knees capable of holding the Airflex Combat Kneepads. The FIELDSUIT has inset chest pockets for use with body armor. Both suits are manufactured with the same material as the FR ACU and and will be available in Black, MultiCam, and Ranger Green by the Summer.

Crye Precision COMBATSUIT and FIELDSUIT
To the right you can see their Smart Pouch Suite, which we didn't get a proper photo, but includes a Frag Pouch, 5.56-7.62 MBITR Pouch, 152/Bottle Pouch, GP Pouch 6x6x3, GP Pouch 9x7x3, and GP Pouch 11x6x4

Crye Precision Hitcoat Vest and Hitcoat Sleeves
The Crye Precision Hitcoat combines the Hitcoat Vest and Sleeves, which can be worn together or separately. The Hitcoat Vest features NIJ IIIA Compliant Armor and a zip front closure. The vest is low profile and has a stretch panel for overall comfort when on the move. The sleeves also feature NIJ IIIA protection covering the neck, shoulder, bicep, and forearms. It can be attached to many different vests with a MOLLE or Velcro attachment kit and is well ventilated. Added protection is provided at the elbow and shoulder joints.

Crye Precision LWF Jacket
The LWF Jacket is an insulated shell utilizing a slick faced custom fleece fabric. The outershell is water and stain resistant. The jacket is designed with an athletic form fit and is very flexible for mobility. It features zip handwarmer pockets, integrated thumb loops, draw cord at the hem, and an internal chest pocket. Expect the Crye Precision LWF Jacket by this Spring.

Crye Precision Airframe ATX
The Airframe ATX Helmet features NIJ Level IIIA ballistic protection with the Crye Precision vented shell design and other features of the original Airframe. The new helment is geared toward law enforcement with and will be available this Fall in Black, Tan, and Ranger Green.

Crye Precision Field Shell 2
Crye Precision updated the Field Shell with a more athletic fit for the Field Shell 2. It still features the Nano STX 4-way stretch fabric and now has inner stretch cuff baffles for a secure fit rather than the previous adjustable hook and loop cuffs. The Field Shell 2 also features a more standard solid hook face rather than two hook strips on the bicep pockets. It will be available this fall in Black, MultiCam, and Ranger Green.

Halfjak Insulated, LEO1 Pants, Compact Assault Ghillie
The Halfjak Insulated is the latest variant of the minimalist over-armor outwear, which now features a ClimaShield loft in conjunction with the Nano STX shell. We touched on the LEO1 Pants covering the camo on hand, which are a more affordable version of the Crye Precision Combat Pant with a professional aesthetic for a duty uniform. Of course you recognize the Compact Assault Ghillie again this year, which as far as we know didn't make an early departure from the show.

Crye Precision Low Profile Chest Rig
In addition Crye Precision released a Loft Jacket, which is an insulated softshell with stowable hood and stretch cuff with integrated thumb loops. You can see parts of it in the LWF Jacket and Field Shell 2 Shots, but clearly we were too excited to get a proper photo. They will also be offering a Low Profile Chest Rig that is featured in their catalog with a zip front closure. The skeletal cummerbund allows you to mount items to the inside of the rig for better concealment while held against the body.

Condor Tool and Knife 2014 Hawks and Blades

Myke Hawke was hanging out at the Condor Outdoor booth firmly grasping one of their latest to chop bush. I was in the right place at the right time and contemplated that I should be looking for some thrashers for which the big blade manufacturer was known to deliver from the dank, deep, and dirty jungles of El Salvador.

Condor Tactical Rescue Tomahawk
The sales rep. had to explain to the current visitor that Condor blades are not manufactured in China, but El Salvador. I contemplated the countless visitors asking "where are they made", followed by a quick response, "Its OK, they use U.S. Dollars in El Salvador and it helps develop the economy." Knowing what I know about El Salvador, this is a perfectly valid argument, though they are still not manufactured in the United States as those few knife companies manage to pull off.

Moonstalker Knife (top) and Slobolo Knife (bottom)
I guess the owner has some connection or another to the Central America paradise but, I wasn't paying enough attention as I contemplated what Myke Hawke was up to. Mr. Hawke did so himself as he firmly and gruffly proclaimed, "Where do I go next", as he headed off from Condor. I often have this thought at SHOT Show, but tend to think it to myself rather than strongly voice it out loud.

Tomahawk Axe and Soldier Axe
In between explaining the actual knives and their new machetes, the poor fellow had to point out that they were not the Condor Outdoor that craftily hands out swag bags to collect catalogs to sell on Ebay and other tactical goodies strewn across SHOT Show. At any rate this sums up my personal experience at the booth, while waiting dutifully to get some specs and highlights from Condor Tool and Knife. Hope the captions help as that is all I managed to get in the time allotted. If you can take anything from this, its go buy a Warlock Machete. Someone walked off with it, so I couldn't get a photo, but it looks dastardly in the catalog.

There were a lot of great flashlights on hand at the Fenix Booth this year. Bigger and brighter wasn't what it was all about. The new TK61 pumps out up to 1000 lumens and powers past the bigger lights when it comes to throw at over a half mile of reach.

Fenix TK61
The UC45 weighs just 7.9 ounces and has a max output of 960 lumens and is USB rechargeable. A screw down cover protects the USB port from the elements. It features four brightness levels, a strobe mode, and allows for a momentary on setting with the tail switch operation. Overall length is 7 inches with a 1" Diameter at the grip and 1.6" at the head. Both lights will have great price points compared to what is on the market and the trusted quality of Fenix Flashlights.

POF-USA Esquared Extraction

Patriot Ordnance Factory is showing off the E-Squared Extraction technology for their Gen-4 Rifles in about the coolest means possible for displaying extraction. The concept is fairly simple with four channels integrated into the neck of the chamber. When the round is fired super heated gas passes through these channels pushing the cartridge case away from the chamber walls alleviating any resistance to the extractor for removal. Thus, increasing the likelihood of your extractor living a much longer life. The concept is great and the video gives you an all around vantage point on how it works.

Tactical Life made it out to the SIG Sauer Range day and got a chance to shoot the SIG MPX Pistol with stabilizing brace as well as the SIG M400 Predator Rifle as shown in their video below. We had a chance to try on the stabilizer brace at SHOT Show. Lord only knows what they had in mind for this one. We just wish they had an adjustable version for irregular arm lengths. Nonetheless it does work as advertised if a bit awkward.
