When it comes to firearms accessories smaller is generally better with other variables remaining constant and innovation will continue to whittle down the ounces. LaserLyte has now introduced their V4 Compact Laser providing a miniscule laser with just a 1 inch footprint with an MSRP of $109.95. We have provided their full release below.

COTTONWOOD, AZ (February 2014) - LaserLyte innovators in firearms laser technologies,
introduce the next evolution of the LaserLyte® V4 laser (FSL-4) that fits on less than one-inch of a Picatinny rail in front of the trigger guard on any full size handgun.

LaserLyte V4 Compact Laser
Made with a durable 55% glass-filled nylon body for long-term durability with an inner aluminum core that keeps the laser accurate at all times. The new no-snag, contoured lines allow the user to quickly draw and reholster without catching, and with less bulk, reduces printing in concealed carry situations. The new V4 laser with its slimmer, smaller form blends into the gun form yet is easily activated by the user at just a touch of the finger.

The V4 laser is easily mounted on a one-inch or less Picatinny rail with a crossbar screw. An auto-off feature prevents accidental activation of the laser and prevents unnecessary battery depletion. The V4 laser is ambidextrous.

The LaserLyte® V4 FSL-4 laser gets sport shooters and professionals on the target faster, increasing accuracy and overall hits. For more information, visit: LaserLyte.com

Six new packs and bags were launched at SHOT Show in the Vertx booth this year. We had a chance to see the ins and outs on each one and we don't think photos or video will quite do them justice, but they will help give you some concept of the depth put into the design. Vertx also released several unique accessories  including MOLLE compatible platforms allowing you you to attach any existing holsters, pouches, and other gear for easy organization with quick access on the loop faced panels within each pack and bag.

All models also feature a loop lined platform to mount your handgun and magazine holsters along with any other EDC accessories utilizing the MOLLE Adapter Panel System (MAPS) or direct attach MAK (Magazine and Kit) holders, BAP (Belt Adapter Panel), and MPH (Multi-Purpose Holster) options.

Perhaps the Tavor SAR has been over covered given its short existence in the American market, but we, like many think IWI's platform is worth the time given its popularity with actual rifles in civilian hands. The latest big innovation is the 9mm conversion kit, which IWI released at SHOT Show. You can see the complete kit below, which allows for a quick change out to utilize 9mm ammunition rather than the standard .223 Rem. Jerry Miculek provides a complete shooting review in the video below to give you a better idea of what to expect with various ammunition from the fastest shooter in the known universe.

Fight and Flight Tactical: Mag Wallet

We are seeing a lot of great EDC/CCW designs for practical organization in your pocket. Fight and Flight have introduced their Mag Wallet, which does just that for pistol magazines. The best designs are typically simplistic and don't need an instruction manual. The Mag Wallet carries two pistol magazines with 5 different variants based on popular handgun styles including 1911, S&W MP-9 45, Glock 9mm or .40 S&W,  Glock 10mm or .45 ACP, as well as one style for M9, Sig P226, and Springfield XD-9 and 40.

Fight and Flight Mag Wallet
Rather than simply holding two magazines, the Mag Wallet keeps them upright in your pocket for an easy reload and also has a pull tab to complete pull the entire set out of your pocket. The Mag Wallet puts your back pockets to use and allows the floorplates to ride up just outside the pocket. The top of the magazine pockets are bound with webbing to keep them open for an easy insertion and draw. Slip-Not fabric is incorporated to keep the wallet in your pocket when pulling a magazine. When seated a 1/32" HDPE plastic insert helps protects your posterior from indentation. They are now taking orders with the Mag Wallet available in Black, Coyote, and Foliage at: FightandFlightTactical.com

SHOT SHOW Booth Mannequins

There isn't enough time in the course of the four days of SHOT Show to set appointments with all of the companies worth covering. Its been a month, since the show, but this was one topic we had meaning to conceptualize and a new video from CutleryLover put it into perspective for us. We do set a few meetings at SHOT Show for those companies we know we want indepth coverage and with a lot of great products to investigate. However, a lot of the information is garnered direct from the booths for live coverage from the show. This has its setbacks when Larry from shipping is trying to explain the latest product released, and he may have only seen it for himself over a few seconds. A lot of time the product speaks for itself, which can help a lot.

This isn't to knock anyone paying out good money to have a booth at the show as key players are probably in aforementioned meetings or the simple plethora of flesh passing through could be keeping the best product demonstrators from getting out the good info. We just felt this video below gives some insight as to what we can typically run into when trying to get the low down and provide our viewers with the information they are looking for.

SHOT Show is figuratively and literally a marathon when you add up the miles over four days. This combined with ill informed booth staff and shear magnitude of products on display makes it a fun and interesting venture to get to the good stuff. This isn't a cop out, but sometimes the facts may be skewed given the information provider dishing them out. We try to report what's right and provide accurate details, but even we can see how sometimes the details given just may not mesh with reality.

Frankly, we can understand the shear work involved with manning a booth at SHOT Show combined with the evening festivities that Vegas has to offer. Its daunting to say the least, not to mention the little time they may get to check out the massive display put forth by the booths around them. There are plenty of hard workers that help make the show a great event to attend and I wouldn't dare call them mannequins

But, heres to you SHOT SHOW Booth Mannequins. You may not exactly know what is on display at your booth, but hopefully someone gave you a five minute spiel to save you from the ums and ahs inbetween every word. Hopefully that communicable disease you got from pressing flesh is curable and you had a quick recovery from answering the same question every 10 minutes, along with combating swag monkeys trying to pilfer your complete patch/sticker/catalog supply to sell on Ebay.

Thanks to those companies that make sure all staff are knowledgeable about the products their company offers. You greatly benefit your sales and marketing teams by best representing the product.

Guns That Make You Go Hmmm...

$

We get it, shave some weight, cool aesthetic, but why a skeletonized receiver? Aero Precision makes some great receivers and they weigh practically nothing as it is. We don't mean to bash the company as they make great products and if it sales so be it. Aside from aesthetic, why would you want a Swiss cheese receiver?  It certainly isn't adding any durability or function. Obviously it takes more machining and would have to make that up with a higher price point. Afterall skeletonized triggers can cost an extra $60 for nothing other than a few tiny shards of metal carved out. Its not hard to be cynical when it comes to firearms "innovation", but some stuff just needs to be pointed out. By the way get one of their normal receivers now while you can. They are at great prices and you never know when some "panic" may suck up the inventory thus driving up prices again.

Industry Visit: US PALM

$

We are quite lucky that there are many great gear manufacturers located in the Phoenix Metropolitan area. I thought it would be a great idea to visit some of these companies to get an inside look at operations, check out existing product designs, and get a peek at things to come. This is a completely open minded concept with no precepts and it can take us anywhere the host manufacturer is willing to take us. We explained it as such to US PALM Director, Robert Anderson and he was willing to take us up on the concept and provide a welcoming gander at what they were all about.

To give some quick background, US Primary Armament Logistical Manufacturing, simply known as US PALM is a wholly owned subsidiary of SGC Global Industries. You probably best recognize SGC for the Scottsdale Gun Club, which is the premier upscale indoor shooting facility in the Phoenix area. They are also the parent company of the E-Commerce Site SGCUSA along with their government procurement arm SGCTactical.

Scottsdale Gun Club got their start over 9 years ago in North Scottsdale.  Their facilities now consist of 32 shooting lanes with an extensive rental fleet including 200 firearms and 20 select-fire options available for use by the public. Accessibility to these rentals is an important aspect of the overall picture, which we will explain later. SGC is also home to a premium Titanium Membership with access to 8 private lanes, firearms storage, lounge, and a wide array of services. They also have their own gunsmith and variety of training courses. Another aspect that sets them apart from many is a Tactical Bay with Barriers for departmental and civilian training.

US PALM got its start when its Director, Robert Anderson was heading the E-Commerce Site for SGC. Not one to be an armchair cowboy he got ownership on board with developing practical gear solutions for Military and Law Enforcement. This concept has carried over to a multi-million dollar operation with some of the best products in the world for their given utility. Products developed for use by professionals in their field have been modified for civilian friendly purposes. Several of their designs come directly from end-user demand.

US Palm Defender Handgun

The US PALM Defender is one product developed for use with an AR-15 or Handgun (seen above) that takes a Military/LE product concept and modified it for civilian self defense. The Rifle Case 34" seen below is a good example of product improvement by taking a gun case and extending the zipper slightly so that it lays flat allowing it to double as a shooting mat on hot concrete or snow. You can also use it to clean your rifle as well.

US Palm Rifleman Range Bag
Mr. Anderson has a background in law enforcement, firearms development and training, as well as marketing- all of which helped develop and promote US PALM's product lines. He wanted to fill a gap in the market place for U.S. Manufactured gear that wasn't stuck in the past. There is an emphasis on quality and not providing the most expensive products, but at a proper value and function. The AK30 30-Round Polymer Magazine is just one of the innovative and high quality products developed by US PALM that is in a class of its own and definitely has its own interesting back story. The success of this magazine has carried over to more AK focused products including some new developments, which we are excited to divulge.

Agile Combat System
One of the key innovations introduced in 2012 and released by US Palm last year was the Agile Combat System Kit. We had previously covered this Armor/Load Carry System when it first started shipping, but it is undergoing continual evolution. One aspect US PALM focuses on is taking existing designs and making them better for the end user. There are several variants on the same product given the individual utility needed. This can vary by profession or individual unit. The Agile Combat System Kit (ACS) consists of several modular components that can be integrated as the need deems fit. They have also integrated different features such as the high visibility panel seen below for easy identification when needed. The panel folds up, is easily stowed beneath the pack, and can be quickly deployed.

Agile Combat System High Vis Panel
The Desert Tracker Plate Carrier is the main component for the ACS with a three sided armor carry system and will be one aspect of future product development for US PALM. We discussed the future of the industry and they noted that there will be an emphasis on small units and not big contracts. There are very specific units with unique requirements where their products can altered to meet their needs. One key focus is gear for Law Enforcement in flooded areas. This can involve improvements in gear for more hot and humid locales along with lighter weight materials.

Desert Tracker Mini Admin-T
Some of the products under development are new Admin Panels including some with Horizontally Oriented PALS webbing for side access to pouches such as a flashbang. They also have their mini tourniquet design integrated in to a panel as you can see in the photo above. Three new IFAK designs will be introduced along with a US Palm battle belt, which will have a continuous width to avoid any hangups. We discussed Camo and they are quite happy with their current solid colors along with MultiCam and A-TACS AU. The patterns have proven effective for their customers and they want to use what works. They will also be bringing Woodland back as specific units are utilizing the camouflage for their own purposes.

US PALM AK30 30-RD Magazine
Back on the AK front US PALM did reveal to us that they will be releasing an AK "Backend" in conjuction with B5 Systems. Some of the features integrated will be tied in with the AK30 magazine. They didn't elaborate beyond there being a buttstock involved, but you can put two and two together as to the possibilities. We are sure plenty of AK lovers will be excited to pick it up the new US PALM/B5 Systems collaboration to go with their magazines and AK Battle Grip.

US PALM AK and AR Battle Grip (Left to Right)
One of the key aspects of operating out of a world class shooting facility is the immediate access to full auto AK rifles. In combination with a rental fleet US PALM has the perfect test bed for real-world end users. Scottsdale Gun Club rand through 1.1 to 1.3 Million Rounds of Ammunition in a month. Firearms get run to death and they definitely burn through barrels. Many of their customers may have never picked up an AK before and complete novices will do things with it like no other. After their own thorough testing, US PALM can put their product into the rental fleet and let SGC customers beat it up. This allows them to see any potential problems after long term use that may not be picked up on from professional testing.

In addition US PALM elaborated on why you won't find a quad stack magazine with 45 or 30 rounds any time soon. There was plenty of speculation, but it simply comes down to there being too many rules for end use and not being up to field standard. They don't want to develop a product simply for use at the bench.

Thanks to the guys at US PALM for the warm welcome and taking time out of their busy day to show us around. We look forward to our next Industry Visit to get the word out on other great Made in the USA manufacturers like US PALM. View their complete product line at USPALM.com

As with any great Made in theUSA knives and many products for that matter, there will eventually be a Chinese knockoff. This is now the case for Medford Knife and Tool, which Greg Medford divulges in the video below. He gives some key pointers to look for when pegging a ripoff and we assume if the price is too good to be true, then it is most likely not the real deal.

Marietta PD First with GLOCK G42

$

GLOCK, Inc. announced yesterday that the Marietta Police Department has adopted the G42 as their new back up and off duty pistol. They are swapping out their used GLOCK G27 inventory shaving off 12.7 ounces when fully loaded and nearly half an inch in length. Perhaps there is interest in the swap from .40 Cal. to .380 acp, but after the new G42 was well received upon initial firing from several reviewers, we think GLOCK knew exactly where their market was and are already showing their hand and much promise as Marietta PD picked up 100 pistols from GT Distributors after trading in their previous back up pistols received in 1998.

In the release they establish that the Marietta Police Department Firearms Training Unit has a history of testing, evaluating, training, and putting to use the latest in useful/lifesaving technologies. In 1998, Marietta Police began issuing all officers back-up guns, something that only 7% of police agencies did in the US at that time according to an Officer.com poll. In 2004, MPD became the first police agency to issue weapon mounted lights to ALL officers (not just SWAT) for use on their Glock 22 pistols. The firearms unit still receives several calls a month from police firearms trainers from the US and Canada seeking insight on equipping officers with pistol mounted lights. In 2008, all officers were issued a patrol rifle and red-dot optic to better respond to active shooter or other deadly threats from an increased distance.

GLOCK G42
Marietta Police Officers will carry a Glock Model 22 Gen4 (.40 caliber) handgun with a pistol mounted light as their primary sidearm. They will have access to the new Glock Model 42 (.380) and Glock Model 27 Gen4 (.40 caliber) as a back-up / off duty handgun.

Police Chief Flynn, noted, "We’ve seen a lot of hype around this new pistol in the law enforcement community,” said Chad Mathis, Vice President, GLOCK, Inc. “Our hope is that once the Marietta Police Department starts training their officers on the range they will spread the word on just how shootable and reliable the G42 proves to be.” GLOCK points out that the G42 is the smallest and lightest pistol in their product mix, which makes it easily concealed. Perhaps others will put their hopes for a 9mm aside for the shear satisfaction of having what is available now.

Camo in the Courtroom: DCS V. HyperStealth Ongoing

$
0
0
This was a case that we thought was settled long ago through more convenient measures. However, the lawsuit filed by Digital Concealment Systems, LLC against HyperStealth Biotechnology Corp. is still a going concern. DCS known for their A-TACS Camo patterns requested a summary judgement that they did not violate any of HyperStealth's copyrights with their A-TACS FG pattern. This case was in response to cease and desist letters sent from HyperStealth legal counsel stating to stop utilizing the pattern in their commercial ventures and all other venues. We have now found that this summary judgement was denied for the most part, back in November of 2013. A jury trial is now in the works to decide the case.

In response to the lawsuit filed, HyperStealth counterclaimed that 10 of their patterns were being infringed upon. Nine of the patterns were presented for vidence including CAMOPAT, CAMOPAT Avanced Recon, Eurospec35, Ghostex Alpha-3, Ghostex Delta-1, Ghostex Delta-6, Polecam, SOPAT, and SpecAM. They initially mentioned 10 patterns, but one (Eurospec Omni) was dismissed by summary judgement as HyperStealth abandoned their claim due to the DCS response to evidence showing infringement on that particular pattern. We provided full imagery of the pattern evidence in our previous article: Digital Concealment Systems (A-TACS FG) V. Hyperstealth Biotechnology Corp.
Eurospec Omni6-4C-F-60
To reiterate some points as explained in the decision, in order to prove copyright infringement, HyperStealth must show that they have a valid copyright and that elements of the pattern were original and copied. In order to do so, it must be proven the DCS has access to the patterns and there must be substantial similarities between the patterns. Also, copyright protection does not extend to concepts, but actual expressed ideas, which would allow someone to actually copy it. Mind reading is not covered.

DCS contends that no one can reasonably prove similarities between the patterns and that A-TACS FG was independently created, which has an established precedent for disproving copyright infringement if evidence is provided. They did just that with their Camouflage Designer, Phil Duke presenting a video reenactment presenting his methods to creating the pattern.
A-TACS FG Camo Pattern
HyperStealth claims that DCS visited their website 124 times utilizing IP address records and downloaded 61 MB of information prior to the development of A-TACS FG . They also state that Phil Duke omitted some aspects of pattern development in his evidential demonstration, which would lead to some doubt of independent creation.

In response DCS states that Steve Hanks who deals with the marketing side of operations was the person visiting HyperStealth's website for market research and Phil Duke had seen the site when shown to him by Hanks. The court compared patterns and listened to HyperStealth's comparisons of the patterns similar elements along with DCS rebuttals. In the end the court established that there is a valid dispute. So, it appears there is going to be a show down with a Jury making the final decision on the evidence provided.

We have provided the complete Order for Dismissal of Summer Judgement below. You can read full details on the decision along with HyperStealth designer Guy Cramer's testimony on similarities from each of his patterns presented as evidence compare to A-TACS FG, along with the rebuttal from DCS showing the differences between each pattern. Neither side would respond for comment.

One key element that we can take from this whole fandango is that HyperStealth alleges that elements were copied, while not presenting that A-TACS FG is a complete replication of one pattern they have developed. Clearly they think this is a point of contention, but will they be able to present their case in a manner to a Georgia jury that is both convincing and definitive to their defense? We obviously have our own bias across the board as we appreciate the camouflage designs from both companies and actually sell apparel and gear in the A-TACS Camo patterns. In the scheme of things we think this issue could have been better settled outside the court system and we imagine both sides probably would have wanted it that way as well.

Direct Action
From New York Times Bestselling author, and Special Operations veteran, Jack Murphy comes a new military thriller about what happens when America’s best go bad.

The right man in the wrong place.

They call themselves Liquid Sky. A group of rogue SEAL Team Six operators turned soldiers of fortune. They’ve got the training and combat experience to pull off the impossible as their client hires them to stoke the flames of the Arab Spring in certain Middle Eastern countries…and suppress it in others.

Deckard faces the most challenging mission of his career when he comes across intel that puts him hot on the trail of Liquid Sky’s latest assassination in Pakistan, a mission that targets a pro-democracy advocate. Failing to stop the rogue cell, Deckard shoots from the hip and drops his name in the running to be Liquid Sky’s newest member, replacing the one he just killed.

It is a mission unlike any other that Deckard has ever faced. As they strike their targets in the Philippines, Afghanistan, Egypt, and beyond, Deckard has to maintain his cover while sabotaging their operations. If he can hold out just a little longer, he might be able to find out who Liquid Sky is taking their marching orders from.

But the missions are only getting dirtier, and Deckard’s hands are far from clean. When the time comes, not even Deckard knows if he will be able to do all that is necessary to take down Liquid Sky.
